First Stop: Berlin
Since the unification of East and West Berlin in 1989, thousands of young artists have moved to the city, creating a vibrant artistic and creative community that has establishing Berlin as a cultural capital of Europe. In terms of modern and contemporary art, Berlin offers a stunning variety of museums, galleries and project spaces, famous for their avant-garde and experimental approach. And the main reason for being so attractive is the vivid artistic exchange in the city and this is what we are about to explore.
During our program we will have the opportunity to engage directly with numerous renown artists, curators and cultural producers in Berlin, many of whom are professors and leading figures in their artistic field. We will discuss different concepts, formats and notions of Contemporary Art. Of course, they are curious to learn more about your work, interests and projects too.
Additionally, we will have studio visits and backstage talks enabling an exclusive experience of Berlin’s cultural life from the production to the final presentation in galleries and museums. The focus of our program is the 13th Berlin Biennale, organized by the KW Institute for Contemporary Art and the highlights of the Berlin Art Week.

Second Stop: Leipzig
Leipzig is a historic city in eastern Germany, renowned for its cultural and intellectual heritage. It has a vibrant contemporary art scene, largely influenced by the Leipzig School of Painting, a movement that emerged from the HGB Academy of Fine Arts. Founded in 1764, it is one of the oldest art academies in Germany. The rapid rise of artists from Leipzig in the Western art market after the reunification has established Leipzig as a vital hub for the arts, especially for painting. Artists like Neo Rauch and his gallery Eigen+Art have brought international attention to the city's blend of figurative and surrealist painting, which often reflects post-socialist themes and a fusion of realism with dreamlike imagery.
© Baumwollspinnerei
Third Stop: Chemnitz
The 2025 European Capital of Culture - Chemnitz - blends industrial heritage with impressive historical architecture. Once an industrial powerhouse, the city is home to Art Nouveau and Bauhaus-influenced buildings and one of the largest preserved "Victorian" neighborhoods. Landmark of the city is the world famous sculpture of the Karl Marx Monument. The Art Museum "Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz" houses an extensive collection of modern art, including German Expressionism and works by Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and the legendary architect Frei Otto, natives of the city. Chemnitz offers this summer an international program of cultural highlight due to its nomination as European Capital of Culture under the motto: "C the Unseen".
© Chemnitz City
Fourth Stop: Dresden
Dresden is famous for its stunning Baroque and Rococo architecture and its rich artistic heritage. The Zwinger Palace, with its ornate pavilions and galleries, is home to the Old Masters Picture Gallery, featuring works by Raphael and Rembrandt. The Frauenkirche, a symbol of Dresden’s resilience, was meticulously rebuilt after WWII and stands as an architectural masterpiece. The Semperoper, a grand opera house, and the Brühl’s Terrace, offering views over the river Elbe, further highlight the city's artistic and historical significance. The Albertinum houses modern and contemporary art, bridging Dresden’s classical past with its evolving creative scene. In September it will feature a major retrospective of William Kentridge.

Annex 1: Berlin Biennale
4) Lehrter
The major highlight event will be an in-depth exploration of the 13th Berlin Biennale.
The Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art is a major international art exhibition that takes place every two years at different locations in Berlin. Since its first edition in 1998, it has served as an experimental platform for contemporary art, featuring bold artistic perspectives beyond the influence of the art market. Each edition is curated by a new team, bringing together interdisciplinary artists to explore pressing global and local issues.
The 13th Berlin Biennale, curated by Zasha Colah, takes place from June 14 to September 14, 2025. This edition focuses on the concept of fugitivity. The biennale has four key locations in the center of Berlin, creating a walkable route. The parcours is inspired by the circular movements of foxes — a leitmotif of the curatorial program — as they navigate the urban landscape. Underscoring Berlin’s institutions as incubators for artistic ferment, the Berlin Biennale has formed a partnership with cultural spaces deeply embedded in Berlin through co-curatorial projects.
The key venues of the Berlin Biennale:
1) KW Institute for Contemporary Art
The starting point of the Biennale, KW is a leading space for experimental contemporary art in Berlin.
2) Sophiensæle
A former theater and performance space known for its engagement with radical artistic practices.
3) Hamburger Bahnhof - Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart
A former railway station turned into a contemporary art museum, highlighting historical shifts in Berlin.
4) Former Courthouse Lehrter Straße
A new venue introduced for this Biennale, adding a layer of historical significance as a former site of legal authority and potential injustice.
Curatorial concept:
The large presence offoxes within the inner city of Berlin is a starting point for thinking through the 13th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art as an investigation offugitivity. The encounter with urban foxes has been described by poets as presencing, a spinning in place, delaying in the fox’s presence for a time. The mind encounters otherness, but does not move on to associative thought chains—or prejudice. This encounter has less to do with the human identifying with the fox, but of entering a new sphere of equality with it.
This proposal for the 13th edition of the Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art is a working concept offugitivity understood as the cultural ability of a work of art to set its own laws, in the face of lawful violence. This illegality, this foxing, this traversing of laws that are unjust, sometimes happens within the imaginary a joke opens, or are glimpsed in the flicker of artworks.
As a curatorial grounding, this works at two levels within the biennale in the making.
First, slowly coming to the idea of doing away with the notion of minority altogether. To be wary of identity-labels that draw circles around minorities, defining artists as indigenous, nomadic, Dalit, that finally pit one minority against another, but never let them be equal to the false myth of a homogenous majority. This biennale seeks, instead, an encounter rooted in the restoration of lines and channels of dignity. If this sounds obvious, one may only recall to what extent that equality of voice to speak on its own terms, from its unique life of experiences has been stifled in various art contexts, globally.
The second is resisting any a priori decision of what an artwork is, where it may take place, and under what conditions, but relying on its opacities, its illegibility, and taking our illiteracy as a starting point, even for artworks arising from familiar imaginaries.©Zasha ColahZasha Colah
Zasha Colah Curator of the 13th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art

The European Capital of Culture is a designation awarded annually by the European Union to promote cultural diversity and foster mutual understanding among European citizens. Since its inception in 1985, the initiative has highlighted the richness of cultures across Europe and contributed to the socio-economic development of selected cities through cultural engagement.
In 2025, Chemnitz, Germany, holds the title of European Capital of Culture under the motto "C the unseen." This theme emphasizes uncovering and showcasing the city's hidden cultural and historical facets. The program features over 1,000 events and 223 projects, including festivals, exhibitions, concerts, and regional events, aiming to reveal the unseen aspects of Chemnitz and its surrounding region.
A significant component of Chemnitz 2025 is the PURPLE PATH art and sculpture trail, connecting the city with 38 neighboring municipalities. This initiative fosters regional collaboration and invites visitors to explore the broader cultural landscape of the area.
It is curated by the Chinese art expert Alexander Ochs.
The PURPLE PATH becomes a storyteller: Beneath the surface of the installed artworks, an unknown history of the region is being written, a narrative of mining and industry, Exploitation and profit, marginalisation and solidarity, as well as a story of precarity and innovation that continues to this day. Works by more than 60 artists can be found on industrial wasteland, at railway stations, on riverbanks or even in the still waters of a millrace. They enter into a dialogue with farming and textile museums and form connections with castles or old churches, their organs and artworks.©Alexander OchsAlexander Ochs Alexander Ochs是德国著名策展人与艺术经纪人,以深度参与当代艺术及亚洲艺术领域而闻名。

Later, as the director of Alexander Ochs Galleries in Beijing and Berlin, he fostered cultural dialogue between European and Asian artists, creating a platform for artistic exchange. His curatorial work at White Space in Beijing further solidified his reputation as a bridge between Eastern and Western art worlds, focusing on experimental and avant-garde expressions. In 2025, as the curator of PURPLE PATH for Chemnitz’s European Capital of Culture program, he oversees a large-scale public art initiative that integrates contemporary sculptures into the Saxon cultural landscape, reinforcing his commitment to art as a medium of cross-cultural connection.
